There are many free software libraries and frameworks for prototyping and programing with ease. You should look into these programs and frameworks if you are interested in programing as a form of multi media installation and performance. VVVV, Processing, Puredata, unreal technology, OpenFrameworks are all open source projects that have strong community followings.
